In Her Image - Symbol Series
Ancient Again oil on canvas: 38 x 46 Ancient Again could well fit in the Artifact Series. However, it was placed in the Symbol Series to connect the very old idea of the Bird Goddess, the first artifact found carved in stone from the Paleolithic Age, and the image in paint that denotes the triple existence of woman and her connection to life, stone, and other. Ancient Again, is an attempt to bring the almost forgotten back into remembrance. Some figures are painted over and over in different colors, similar to the way petroglyphs were sometimes used in ritual. (Ionia, MI 2008) |
Revisited oil on canvas: Diptych 10x30 each Revisited speaks to the Garden of Eden. The tree of life, the apple, the red high heel, the split canvas and the new life emerging from the staff are symbols of what has taken place and what was about to develop. They appear to be the symbols left from Modern Woman. (Phoenix, AZ 2006) |
Unconditional
oil on canvas: 12 x 12 Created by seeing something more in the layers of a chaotic, throw-away canvas. Playing with color combinations, cloud formations and practicing Hebrew letters. One phrase using one of the seventy-two names of God. The drops of color came after glimpsing the shadows of letters and feeling a sacred sense of connectedness with a process not always known but always present. (Phoenix, AZ & Ionia, MI 2006) |
Woman Circle (after image platinum) oil on canvas: 25 x 25 The idea circle: full circle, circle of friends, circle of life: has always been a part of woman's mythology. In creating the after-image effect, the study attempted to allow the image of the circle to stay fixed in one's eye, but to change from white to platinum, an optical illusion denoting stability and change (the paradox). The Cup
oil on canvas: 30 x 30 The Cup (the chalice) an ancient symbol of woman, combines my past as a potter with my present as a painter. Initially, the painting depicted the toasting goblet suspended between the dark and the light. The cusp of the yin and yang created the ceremonial goblet. A recent change to the background brought the cup (woman) into union with the two entities (perhaps the sun and moon) rather than being their by-product. The toasting goblets were created to celebrate the passages in life and, like woman, help us drink deeply of life's moments. (Ionia, MI 2005) |
Beauty
oil on canvas: 24 x 30 It is very difficult to speak to beauty. The line that separates her from the other is superficial, yet her body is everything which life was told it needed. A uterus to birth the world Breasts to nourish it But no hands to create no feet to move about no head for imparting knowledge These are important parts of woman that have been used but not valued. Their absence is as important to the painting as would be their presence. (Santa Fe, NM 2007) |
Passion (Red w/ Green Stripe) oil on canvas: 24 x 30 Passion came about while being overwhelmed by the many facets of Santa Fe. With nothing in mind to say, but with a passion to paint, I began to work with one color at a time. The painting developed by using it's many tones and hues as well as the disciplines of patience and observation. Once completed, the passion and emotions of creating for it's own sake became a reality. (Santa Fe, NM 2007) |
Into the Other oil on canvas: 24 x 33 Speaks once again to the circles of life. The delicate line between beginnings and endings and the bond between all involved in the process of creation. At the time, the execution of the painting had more to do with playing with color than with topic. (Tucson, AZ 2007) |
Still Point
oil on canvas: diptych 15 x 22 each
The circle becomes the dominate focus, now found deep inside the ancient caverns.
Both cavern and circle, created by the four basic elements: water, fire, earth and wind.
The painting embraces the moment just before beginning. It is the still point.

Contemporary Artifact oil on canvas: 26 x 33 A look at color and design with a sense of the ancient written into the paint. There is no hidden meaning, just the simple joy of color, brush strokes and canvas. This was the final painting done in Tucson. Using the same basic colors as in Into the Other (1st Tucson painting ), the painting is clear and bright, giving the appearance of a transformation completed. (Tucson, AZ 2008) |
A Sense of Gratitude
oil on canvas: 39 x 46
A Sense of Gratitude is an attempt to capture the emotions in how a deep wound to the spirit may
be the very thing which will cause you to grow and develop into who you were really made to be.
There are five layers to this painting.
The first layer is the line drawn or the wound made. It was blood red and deep purple blue.
The second layer is scar tissue, haphazardly applied whites toning down the deep cut of the spirit.
The third layer is small spirals colliding with each other, representing the
experiences of self with others healing the scar.
The fourth layer is an ascending/descending spiral created by one tone of white covering
and joining all experience into one continuum where we see the beauty and perfection
of the experience and feel a deep sense of gratitude .
The last layer is number 14 of the Tao.
